This talk reports on a study which examined the cognitive processing and mental health tendencies of physical scientists, groups of which included meteorologists, engineers, physicists, and mathematicians. Using subjects in the social sciences and humanities for comparison purposes, we examined multiple aspects of mental health in these groups, including depression, stress, and anxiety. In addition, building upon earlier work which linked autism spectrum condition (ASC) to engineering, physics, and mathematics, we examined, for the first time to our knowledge, potential linkages between autistic traits and meteorologistsí cognitive tendencies. We will present our findings and potential implications for them in the context of weather forecasting and communication practices throughout the weather enterprise.
