Polar Satellite System’s Proving Ground and Risk Reduction (PGRR) Program –
PGRR Initiatives Bringing NOAA Together With Its Partners to Improve Their
Response to Environmental Disasters!
Bill Sjoberg, NOAA JPSS Program, Lanham, MD
This presentation will focus specific actions taken by NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Program’s Proving Ground and Risk Reduction (PGRR) projects in response to real-world environmental events. PGRR Initiatives have proven to be invaluable forums for JPSS Program personnel to meet with NOAA Line Office subject matter experts, and representatives from federal, state, and local agencies to evaluate JPSS capabilities and how they can be effectively used in response to disasters. Here are several examples. In 2016, Fire and Smoke Initiative Team Members met with the Alaska Fire Service to ensure they have full access to Suomi NPP products. Members of the JPSS Sounding Team participated in the El Nino Rapid Response Field Campaign to show the value of satellite soundings to campaign planners in guiding aircraft deployment decisions to maximize sensors time in atmospheric rivers. The JPSS River Flood product was used by US Army Corp of Engineer personnel to evaluate the movement of flooding water along river basins to prepare the local public for evacuation. Information on additional JPSS Initiatives will be provided.
